Rain, Fellowship, Food, Gremlin, in Texas

Team SVS traveled to the Lonestar State of Texas over this past weekend to compete at Lonestar Speedway in Kilgore, TX with the General Tire sponsored "Cutting Edge" Ford.

Our travels to the event allowed us to see how wide the great Mississippi had grown out of her banks when we crossed in Vicksburg, MS early Friday morning. Mother nature also decided to show her strength in Kilgore on Friday night right before show time as the event was canceled due to rain.

We didn't let the rain slow us down, because if it rains out a session you can be sure we are going to find somewhere to go eat. Andy Wilkes and wife Betty who are family friends and hunting buddy of team member Michael Chandler came over to the event from Monroe, Louisiana to watch the show and fellowship. After the rain out we all headed out (including Keith and Ricky Long, Keith's grandson Mason, Gary and Eric Varner),  to the local favorite Bodacious Restaurant for some great Texas style Bar-b-que, potato salad, pinto beans, and some much needed Sweet Tea. Some in the bunch could had done without the pinto beans. Ha!

Saturday brought sunshine and a more promising outlook for the event. However, eating was still on everyone's mind. Long time pulling friend from New Mexico "Sonny Martinez" treated our group to some wonderful Fajita's. Then to top it all off "Charlie HInes" with the "Runnin Wild Texas Style" 4wd brought out Crawl fish, Boiled Shrimp, Fried Flounder, Corn on the cob, Hush puppy's, and more. WOW !!! Let me tell you they make it spicy in Texas. We had to make a special trip to Dairy Queen after all that to cool down the tongue. As always our travels are as much about the people we meet and get to fellowship more so than the competition.

Now on to the competition. The General Tire "Cutting Edge" had drawn the 11th hook position for the show. PPL had done a great job in preparing the track after several inches of rains fell the previous night. This dirt was red but more sandy than the clay we had experienced in Saluda a few weeks earlier. While warming up the GT "Cutting Edge" in the pits the injector seemed to be sticking and causing for a less than smooth throttle response. We actually thought it was more of the clutch pack being too tight and we knew we could overcome that when hooked to the sled.

During the class competition, everyone was running down the left hand sideline. Team Nelson and Team Sullivan were really showing everyone how to get it done. Finally it was our turn. We decided to run the same path as the others. Jordan Nelson had just taken the lead right ahead of us so we felt like it was our best move. When we fired the engine and I drove out to the track the truck just took off and I couldn't stop it without holding the brakes. The throttle had jumped to high idle and I needed help from crew to slow it down because the throttle wouldn't return to normal position. When I went to back up to sled it did it again. We really should have dropped to last and looked the problem over more carefully. I thought that once I hooked to the sled I could over come the problem. Unfortunately I could not. The throttle cable was actually breaking down and loosing all its smooth travel. When I tried to easily drive the truck out of the hole, it instantly went to high idle and lost any chance of a smooth transition (what we like to call blowing the tires off it) and in this level of competition you have very little chance of being competitive without a smooth hole shot.  I would say that we were lucky to go as far down the track as we did.

This is one of those instances when we should have dropped and tried again at the end of the class after figuring out the problem. Sometimes you just get so geared up to compete that good judgment doesn't seem to be something that is thought about. We had a bad spark plug wire bite us at Saluda, SC and now a faulty throttle cable in Texas. Hopefully we have all the Gremlins behind us and will have better luck at our next event.

Below is a photo right before we fired up to compete from our onboard camera. We accidentally hit the option to take a photo instead of record. If it had recorded it would have been entertaining to watch all the drama just getting backed up to the sled, much less the poor run.

As always we enjoy the traveling and fellowshiping with great friends no matter where the sport takes us or how well we do. Thanks to everyone for a great weekend and a good time. We hope to be back in Kilgore in 2012.

2011 Season kickoff at "Saluda Spring Nationals"

Team SVS had a great start to the 2011 Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League Season in Saluda South Carolina on April 29-30. The General Tire sponsored "Cutting Edge" Hemi powered Ford came out of the gate strong on Friday night by taking the lead in the class of 19 competitors. However, Jeremy Nelson (Midnight Gambler)and brother Jared Nelson (RockStar/Midnight Revenger) slipped past the GT Ford at the end of the class to take over the number 1 and 2 spots for Friday night. We finished 3rd.

In Saturday night competition the GT "Cutting Edge" Ford had drawn a late hook in the class and was looking to duplicate the run it had made on the previous night. Unfortunately it was not to be. A spark plug malfunctioned and caused the #1 cylinder to miss the entire run and we finished last among the point runners. If you don't have everything perfect when you compete on this level of competition you will not be successful. The win tonight went to the Long Brothers out of Glasgow, KY with their "Ridin Dirty" chevy.

After missing most of the entire 2010 season with the Culp Lumber sponsored "Shel-Shocked" Mod from chassis failure, we were finally making our debut with our new Engler Machine prepared chassis. We thank Engler Machine for such a great piece of workmanship, but we also want to say a special thank you for all the time and effort that was put forth by family and friends to get the tractor ready for competition.

Now on to the competition, We had drawn 2nd hook in the class of 12 on Friday night with "Shel-Shocked". Needless to say we were all very nervous with anticipation. After all we had just gotten it finished a few days before this National event. The track seemed to really be taking power and front end weight. Not wanting to be too aggressive on the first pass. We heaved the front end of the tractor with more than we thought it needed and headed to the track. Tractor came off the line smooth and made a nice straight pass to around 311 feet. Our lead was eventually over taken by Rockstar Dirtslinger, Down & Dirty, and Mr. Twister. We ended up finishing 4th on the night which was fantastic.

On Saturday night we had drawn the 5th hook position which would give us alittle more time to evaluate the track conditions and hopefully make some improvements to the performance of the tractor. We also had valuable information from our onboard Racepak Computer from the previous nights run to help us improve the performance of the 4 Hemi's. After the Barga family made an awesome pass with the triple turbine powered "Apache" past 340 feet on the test hook of the class, the officials decided to heavy the sled. Knowing that the sled was going to be tighter than Friday night, we made some last minute changes that fortunately worked in our favor. We setup right of center on the track, drove it alittle different out of the hole than we did on Friday night and it paid off. We took the lead at 305 and ended up holding on for our first win in the Mod class. This was a night when almost every tractor in the class had to make a brake adjustment going down the track to keep straight. We feel very fortunate that the slight adjustment that we had to make going down the track allowed us to take the win.

Next trip for team is Kilgore, TX with only the General Tire "Cutting Edge" making the trip. Next hook for Culp Lumber sponsored "Shel-Shocked" is Wilmington, OH on June 18th.  We are going to attempt to give some type of event recap or blog from all our travels throughout the season. Please check us out when you have time.

We now have a GoPro on board camera on each vehicle during its run to help us evaluate what happened during each run. Grayson is handling the videos. See below photos for videos from Saluda.

2009 Knoxville, TN
"Shel-Shocked" Multi-Engine Tractor to be converted to "Fully Loaded" mode for 2010. After a great experience in our first year of competing in the Pro Pulling League Champions Tour Mod class. We are currently in the process of coverting the chassis and engines to compete with "Four" supercharged hemi's on board in 2010 instead of three. Rules allow for either 3 engines with 14-71 superchargers or 4 engines with smaller 8-71 superchargers. We plan on making several exhibition passes this winter to shake down the new combination before the first points hook in Knoxville,TN in June of 2010. Some shop photos of the conversion process are below. We will continue to update as the process continues.
Chassis with 4 engine gearbox
4 engine cradle added
Single speed reverser to replace 3 speed transmission to save weight
Change rearend ratio for 4 engine combo
Increase fuel capacity for 4 engine combo with large tank on front
What a mess !!!
Replaced 14-71 superchargers with smaller 8-71's
Mounted front two engines for mockup.
Confirmed fuel tank clearance of engines
Installed collector style headers between engines for easy removal of valve covers for maintance.
Fresh 3 disc clutch installed on fourth engine
Replaced steel clutch cans with Browell Aluminum cans for a 20lb savings per engine.
Engine #3 mounted
Freshened planetary from Humpco installed in rear
Fuel tank hinged for access to valve covers on front two engines
Drivers compartment ready
Engine #4 mounted
Tires remounted. Glad it was my turn to hold the camera. Ha!
Late night first weigh in.. How much did it weigh ?
Crew said driver has to loose weight or start drilling holes.
Driver figures out its easier to remove oil filters and adapters for 7.5 lb per engine than drilling holes.
Installed Stroud gearbox safety blanket
5 lb savings per cover to switch to black magnesium valve covers instead of polished aluminum style
Installed SAE 4 engine safety kill switch
